Composition: Not Just About Positioning Your Subject, But About Positioning Yourself Too by Darren Rowse

Composition is not just about positioning subjects in your shot – but sometimes is more about positioning yourself as a photographer in order to make a more pleasing arrangement of subjects in your frame.
I learned this principle for myself back in a high school photography class where my teacher pointed out that every portrait I took was taken from a standing position. This meant any time I took a shot of someone seated – I was looking down on them – not always a flattering and engaging look.
Height is one way to alter your perspective as a photographer. In many cases a shot taken from or just below the eye level of your subject is ideal and creates a more intimate shot. However mixing it up can also leave you with a creative and interesting perspective.

Looking down on someone looking up at you can also be powerful – and looking up from the ground at someone can dramatically alter the look and feel of the shot also.

Adding Emotion and Feeling To Photographs by Peter West Carey

One thing that makes a great photo is its ability to convey emotion. Emotion in a photograph, or any work of art, is what helps a viewer connect with a piece if that emotion is prevalent in the viewer. Happiness and joy, sorrow and despair, these are some of the easier emotions as they are universally felt, at one time or another, by all on this planet.

A Volcano Miner’s Work Day

To work in a mine near a volcano has to be the filthiest job ever, maybe considered as one of the worst. Photographer Oliver Grunewald took several stunning photos of the sulfur mines in the crater of the volcano Kawah Ijen that is located in East Java, Indonesia. Volcanos are known for being unpredictable, and it is quite a risk to work at a place like this, but there are people that is actually doing it for a living.

The photos show some really amazing colors of the volcano and the lava, almost so you can feel the heat. It looks like the most tough job, so hats down for the mine workers. Speaking of mines, this is the largest hole that humans dug; the Kimberley Mine.
